Starting a new job can be daunting, but it's also an exciting opportunity for you to meet new people and make a positive first impression. All you need for a successful start requires is an open mind and a desire to show yourself in the best light possible.
Here are our top 6 pointers to help you make the best possible first impression:
1. Fact Find
It's perfectly acceptable to make inquiries ahead of time. You can contact Human Resources or your supervisor depending on your organisation, to find out what’s expected before you start. Check with the person who offered you the position if you're not sure who to ask. Find out about your work schedule, the number of hours per week you'll be working, dress code, benefits, and any other information you'll need to join the team.
2. Plan on arriving a few minutes early
Doing a trial run before starting a new job is an easy way to help reduce stress on your first day. How are you going to travel, by car or public transport? Make the trip a few days in advance to assess how long it will take allowing for traffic or other delays, and make sure you know the timetable if travelling by bus or train or parking arrangements if you’re driving. Then leave yourself some additional time on your first day so you can arrive a few minutes early.
3. Don't be scared to ask for assistance and advice
When you're starting a new job, there's no such thing as a stupid question. Your boss would prefer that you ask. That's a lot less work than having to correct a mistake. You won't be expected to know everything and asking for guidance is preferable to guessing.
4. Create connections
Building new relationships can be tricky, especially when you're the new kid on the block. It's more difficult if you don't have an outgoing personality, and meeting new people feels daunting. Make an effort to be warm and friendly, and asking for advice is always a smart way to break the ice.
5. Request feedback
When you're starting a new job, being humble is a good idea. Take time to listen and learn from others in the team while getting an understanding of the company and group dynamics . Ask your boss how you're doing, if he or she can offer any advice, and if there are any areas where you can improve.
6. Don't put too much pressure on yourself
Consider your new position as the next exciting step in your professional journey. You can’t expect to learn everything at once. It's all new to you and even though you’re bringing a wealth of skills and experience to the company, it will still take a little time for you to find your feet.
